Wed. Mar. 12 - San Sebastian

Inland from Puerto Vallarta, situated in the Sierra Madre Mountains, is an old mining town that has a completely different atmosphere than Puerto Vallarta. At an elevation of 4,500 ft.. there are pine trees, crisp, clear air and nighttime temperatures that can be very cool.
In the surrounding valley you'll find cattle, corn and coffee plantations. This local coffee is excellent and you can sample and purchase it in town.
Founded in 1605, San Sebastian del Oeste was one of the gold and silver mining centers of Mexico. At one time a provincial capital of 40,000 people, you will find it strangely deserted with only about 600 people living there now.

Bill, Kathy, Jack, Rob and Sue left Bucerias around 9 a.m. and arrived in San Sebastian at 11.  They made one quick stop for Jack to heave his breakfast.  It must have been the elevation and the winding roads.  Robert gets motion sickness as well, but he seemed to hold in his porridge.

The gold and silver mines in the San Sebastian area were one main reason for the birth of Puerto Vallarta, as salt was brought to S,S,from this coastal village for use in the processing of the precious metals.  The gold and silver was then taken by mule to Mexico City, then on to Vera Cruz where it was shipped to Spain once a year.  There was an earthquake in 1868 and the town had to be rebuilt.  There is talk now that it will soon be made into a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It was certainlty worth the trip! If you go, be sure to visit the rose gardens in the 'Square;, the quaint Catholic church, the museum where a resident of the town tells a very interesting story about the local residents, the jail for its unique artwork, and the coffee store.  The 'chocolate, cinnamon, sugar coffee' is to die for.

Bill's van was back in Bucerias by 4 p.m. and everyone had a great day!

Jack ate his lunch and for dessert enjoyed a peanut brittle cookie.

interesting street lights lead the way out

Jack loved the story in the museo about how all the people in the village were all related long ago.

Bill's van brought everyone back to Bucerias safely.
